APRÈS LA PLUIE

By Margaux Duseigneur

Reinvention after the storm. A manual for joyful survival.

In Après la pluie (After the Rain), Margaux Duseigneur rejects the gloom typical of post-apocalyptic stories. Instead, she creates a radiant utopia of reconstruction. The "end of the world" has already happened—now, the real work of living begins.

Unfolding across three distinct movements, the book functions as both a narrative and a guide. We follow communities building "edible landscapes" and hand-shaped gardens, organizing wild carnivals among the ruins to reclaim their joy. Food plays a central role here; Duseigneur actually weaves detailed recipes into the story, treating the act of cooking for others as the ultimate language of love and resistance.

Visually, the book is hypnotic. Citing influences like the abstract motion of Yuichi Yokoyama and the strange landscapes of Max Ernst, Duseigneur uses a unique layering technique—superimposing delicate pencil drawings on tracing paper over vibrant blocks of marker ink. The result is a world that feels shifting, supple, and alive.

About the Artist

Margaux Duseigneur is a French artist whose practice spans independent publishing, animation, and scenography. Now based in the rural landscape of Uzerche (Corrèze), she co-directs the L'Oasis artistic residency, a role that mirrors the themes of collective living found in her books.

Her visual style is deeply informed by her decade-long career in cinema; she served as Head of Scenography for the César-winning animated film Linda veut du poulet! and Florence Miailhe’s The Crossing. This mastery of atmosphere is evident in her print work, where she layers materials to create depth and movement. A central figure in the European underground scene, she also spent ten years co-organizing the cult Fanzines! Festival in Paris.
