GRASSES (Random Interest 01)
By Nnene.iie
A botanical dissection of the undergrowth.
In Grasses, Thai illustrator NNENEIIE treats the humble lawn as a subject of scientific wonder. This zine functions as a visual encyclopedia of the undergrowth, offering intricate studies of grass anatomy—from the delicate reproductive systems to the tangled architecture of the roots.
Designed as an accordion-fold (leporello), the zine unfolds to a full 77cm width. This format allows the botanical illustrations to sprawl across the paper, mimicking the way grass spreads and takes root in the wild.
Printed by the master printer at The Archivist in Bangkok, the screenprinting process gives the scientific details a tactile quality. The ink sits heavily on the thick, textured card stock, turning technical diagrams into pieces of art.

About the Artist
Nanthawan Jamsai (professionally known as NNENEIIE) is a Thai multidisciplinary artist and illustrator based in Nonthaburi. A graduate in Communication Design from Chulalongkorn University, she has developed a distinctive voice defined by "maximalist composition"—filling the page with intricate black pen work that fuses traditional drawing with the structure of graphic design.
Her practice is rooted in the immediacy of ink. Rejecting the ability to erase, she captures the spontaneity of daily life, turning everyday objects—chairs, trees, and personal archives—into dense, textured narratives. Her work has been showcased in the solo exhibition Watch Me Nene at Kinjai Contemporary (2024) and she has collaborated with major international clients.
